The Cook County Forest Preserve District Board of Commissioners on Tuesday passed an intergovernmental agreement with the Prairie Research Institute of the University of Illinois for the development of a Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plan.

According to Arnold Randall, superintendent of the Cook County Forest Preserve District, the district will use “scientists and professionals who are in the environmental [and] ecological world to help us assess our ecological value and … help us to create an overarching plan for restoration.”

As part of its ongoing effort to protect Cook County homes and businesses from flood damage and keep the region’s waterways free of raw sewage, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District announced it is close to completing excavation efforts on the second of three planned reservoirs under its Tunnel and Reservoir Plan.

Water district sees 3-year drop in rain barrel sales

Despite low prices and rebate opportunities, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has seen a marked decline in rain barrel sales over the past three years.

Used to collect and reuse rainwater from rooftops, the MWRD’s repurposed, 55-gallon plastic barrels go for $58 per unit, plus tax (prices for barrels bought commercially can range from $70 to $500). The district has been selling the barrels since 2009. The price includes home delivery and an installation kit.
