Council passes mayor’s gun control measures

The City Council on Wednesday during a special meeting unanimously passed gun control ordinances introduced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

One of the ordinances strengthens the city’s assault weapons ban and establishes new possession penalties of 20-90 days in jail and a $1,000-$5,000 fine. The measure was introduced in the wake of gun-related legislation enacted by the state last week that gave Chicago and other cities 10 days to update their assault weapons bans.
