A Chicago City Council committee passed by voice vote on Tuesday two gun control measures introduced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel despite several aldermen’s contentions that the proposed penalty for possessing an assault weapon is too lax. A National Rifle Association lobbyist, meanwhile, testified that ordinances would be vulnerable to legal challenges.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and representatives of Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration joined officials from Method on Tuesday to announce the development of a flagship manufacturing facility on Chicago’s South Side.

Method, a maker of soaps, detergents and home cleaning products, plans to open its first U.S. manufacturing facility near E. 111th St. and S. Doty Avenue in the Pullman neighborhood, according to a mayoral press release. The company expects to create about 100 new manufacturing jobs in Chicago and will seek LEED certification for the building.

Illinois wind farms will provide five percent of the electricity supplied through Chicago’s municipal aggregation program with Integrys Energy Services, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday.

In a mayoral press release, Emanuel said his administration negotiated with energy suppliers to come up with the deal, which doubles the amount of wind energy the city’s residents and businesses received through ComEd.
