Billiken’s back

A summer job

DNAinfo on Tuesday profiled Richard Vargas, a physical education teacher at Chicago Public Schools’ Morrill School who has been occupying his summer downtime by selling ice cream.

“It’s gorgeous out here,” Vargas said, sitting at his ice cream cart at North Avenue Beach. “I get to meet new people; the people in Chicago are great and very friendly.”

Ice cream, you scream

In an early celebration of National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, ride-share company Uber on Friday was delivering frozen treats throughout Chicago.

Ordering ice cream through Uber was just like ordering a ride through the Uber app, DNAinfo Chicago reported. Except instead of selecting “Uber X,” “black car” or “taxi,” users were given the option to hail an ice cream truck.

World Cup no match for Preckwinkle

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle gave a speech to a packed room during a Thursday City Club of Chicago event even though a high-stakes World Cup soccer match between the United States and Germany was taking place at the same time.

“I’m glad, maybe a little surprised to see so many people here during the World Cup,” Preckwinkle joked. “I’ll try to be as brief as possible so you can see the end of the game.”

A bad rap

Republican Don Wilson, who is attempting to defeat incumbent state Sen. Terry Link (D-Waukegan) in the November general election, published on YouTube Wednesday a rap-themed campaign advertisement.

“He believes a better economy helps people with jobs and careers for the future years,” a rapper recites in the ad. “He’s a Republican that believes in the Home of the Brave and the Land of the Free.”
