Rahm to the rescue

While making a stop at Big Shoulders Coffee at the intersection of Milwaukee, Ogden and Chicago avenues in River West on Tuesday morning, Mayor Rahm Emanuel heard a loud noise outside. Springing into action, the mayor ran outside to assist a woman who was one of three cyclists involved with a crash with a truck that apparently attempted to make a right turn onto Ogden from Milwaukee. Emanuel waited with the unidentified woman until ambulances arrived. Nobody involved in the crash was seriously injured, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Out of town

Gov. Pat Quinn was scheduled to head to Japan Friday to attend the 45th Annual Midwest U.S.-Japan Association Conference. Quinn plans to meet with the chief executives of large Japanese companies interested in bolstering their business in Illinois. Japan is currently the state’s second largest source of direct foreign investment and is responsible for over 50,000 jobs in Illinois.

Daley on duty

Bill Daley, Democratic candidate for Illinois governor, was summoned to jury duty this week – a time when gubernatorial primary campaigns are heating up. Daley, who was on a panel of about 30 jury candidates for a civil trial in the courtroom of Cook County Circuit Court Judge Sidney Jones, found out Thursday he was not selected to serve, according to Crain’s Chicago Business.

A few good officers

Atmosphere Casting, the Chicago-based company tasked with casting extras for NBC’s forthcoming “Chicago PD” show, is seeking real Chicago police officers to be featured in the program, according to NBC Chicago. The show began filming on set yesterday and will begin filming on location in Pilsen next week. Those interested in appearing on the show are being asked to fill out applications on Atmosphere Casting’s website.

Say “cheese!”

In honor of National Cheese Pizza Day Thursday, Huffington Post Chicago launched a poll asking its readers which Chicago pizzeria has the best “cheesy” pies. The top three vote-getters in the poll were Giordano’s (25.48 percent), Lou Malnati’s (19.16 percent) and Piece (13.66 percent). As the site pointed out, National Cheese Pizza day on Sept. 5 should not be confused with Pizza Pie Day (Feb. 9), National Sausage Pizza Day (Oct. 11) or National Pizza With Everything Except Anchovies Day (Nov. 12). October is National Pizza Month.
