Development and the related traffic congestion in the Loop and West Loop took center stage at Thursday’s meeting of the Chicago Plan Commission as commissioners signed off on plans for new towers in both neighborhoods.

The commission unanimously approved a proposal for a 42-story, 476-foot high mixed-used building on the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Lake Street downtown. Commissioners also approved a 170-foot tall, 167-unit residential building at the intersection of Madison and Green Streets in the West Loop.

Sweeping old Main Post Office project clears Plan Commission

The Chicago Plan Commission unanimously approved on Thursday a massive and long-anticipated $1.5 billion residential and retail development at the old Main Post Office in the West Loop, a building that has sat vacant since 1996.

Phase one of the project includes a 1,000-foot tower, 2,155 rental units, 300,000 square feet of retail space, 500,000 sqaure feet of office space, and a 321-room hotel, among other features. Phase two of the project includes the construction of a 170-story structure slated for mostly residential use.

Tunney now in support of Wrigley development plans

Tom Tunney (44th) abruptly dropped his opposition on Thursday to the proposed renovations of Wrigley Field and the redevelopment plans for the surrounding area that include construction of a boutique hotel and plaza, and the Chicago Plan Commission approved the sweeping project 14-0.
