CTA board cites ethics concerns over ad partnership with special events department

The Chicago Transit Authority board took part in some ethical troubleshooting Friday related to an advertising agreement with the city.

The item in question was a “co-promotional trade agreement” between the CTA and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events that allows the transit agency to promote programming and ridership initiatives at events like the Taste of Chicago and the Chicago Blues and Jazz Festivals. Each of those events draws an average of around 500,000 visitors per year.

Community outreach efforts promoting Bus Rapid Transit in Chicago are getting a push from a newly awarded Rockefeller Foundation grant.

The national grant, announced on Monday, splits $1.2 million in funding between Chicago, Nashville, Boston and Pittsburgh to “support research, communications and community outreach efforts to engage and educate local stakeholders on the benefits of BRT.”
