Panel approves contentious redevelopment of former Children’s Memorial site

The Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday approved a proposal to redevelop the former site of the Children's Memorial Hospital in Lincoln Park, rezoning the property to accommodate two new 21-story residential towers.

The CMH site has been the center of controversy for years as stakeholders including 43rd Ward Alderman Michele Smith and Lincoln Park community members sparred over what will replace the hospital, which stood at the six-corner crossroads of Lincoln, Fullerton and Halsted for more than 100 years.

CHA's Altgeld Gardens project inches forward

Members of the Chicago Housing Authority Board approved the fifth modification on a redesign contract for the Altgeld Gardens public housing development during a meeting Tuesday. The rehashed deal would add no more than $213,736 to a contract between the CHA and Holabird and Root LLC for the rehabilitation of 509 units not currently available for occupancy at Altgeld.

Under the terms of the contract, Holabird and Root will also renovate or construct new community facilities, new commercial spaces, a new green boulevard and outdoor recreation spaces, according to CHA spokespeople.
