Department of Buildings commissioner aims to crack down on illegal conversions

Chicago Department of Buildings Commissioner Felicia Davis during a Monday City Council Budget Committee hearing said her department needs additional “tools” to crack down on owners of residential homes illegally converted to contain more units than the city code permits.

City launching campaign to raise recycling awareness

On Monday Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration announced a partnership between the Department of Streets and Sanitation and the Carton Council nonprofit designed to encourage Chicagoans to recycle.

Carton Council is made up of juice, milk and other food carton manufacturers that are “united to deliver long-term collaborative solutions in order to divert valuable cartons from the landfill.”

The Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library has received new energy-efficient lighting as part of the Chicago Infrastructure Trust’s Retrofit I initiative.

Using an average of 35 fewer watts per light fixture across a total of 6,000 metal halide light bulbs will help the city save “some real money” on energy costs, Public Building Commission Project Manager George Marquisos told members of the Infrastructure Trust Board during a meeting on Thursday. He also said the new bulbs provide far brighter and cleaner lighting than the previous bulbs.
