Preckwinkle continuing to push criminal justice reform in second term

On Monday Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said her administration will lobby for passage of legislation at the state level ending the automatic transfer of youth in Illinois to adult court for certain crimes. Preckwinkle explained the effort will be her “top criminal justice priority in Springfield in this next session.” The lobbying effort will be a key element of Preckwinkle’s work to make criminal justice reform a focus of her second term as board president.

Preckwinkle proposes $3.99 billion 2015 budget with no new taxes

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle introduced a proposed $3.99 billion 2015 county budget that contains no new taxes, fines or fees during a special meeting of the Cook County Board Thursday.

The budget proposal represents a spending increase of approximately 12 percent compared to this year’s $3.56 billion budget. Much of that spending increase is the result of a $409.7 million rise in allocations for the Health Enterprise Fund for spending related to CountyCare.

County board's finance committee OKs bond sale for capital improvement projects

The Cook County Board Finance Committee approved the sale of a bond on Wednesday that will fund capital improvement projects in 2014 and 2015.

The committee entered into an agreement with PNC Bank for the issuance of a $125 million bond. The county will pay a “very, very low” rate of 0.05 percent in interest under the deal, according to county CFO Ivan Samstein.
