Mayor targets gun violence through new Council measures

Mayor Rahm Emanuel introduced measures to the City Council on Wednesday aimed at curbing gun violence in Chicago.

One of those ordinances is designed to increase safety for students by creating  new “student safety zones” and hiking the penalties for serious weapon and gun-related offenses that take place in those zones.

Mayor proposes “first of its kind” cargo center at O’Hare

Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposed the development of a cargo center at O’Hare International Airport that would store perishable items such as flowers, food, and medicine.

On Wednesday, Emanuel introduced to the City Council the measure establishing an agreement with Chicago Perishable Center, Inc. for the operation of a 27,000 square foot center just east of O’Hare’s Terminal 5. If the measure receives the Council’s approval, the center will open next year.

City Council green lights Emanuel’s revised parking meter deal

The Chicago City Council passed Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s renegotiated parking meter contract on Wednesday by a vote of 39-11. Several aldermen thanked the mayor for negotiating the revisions to the 75-year lease of city meters to Chicago Parking Meters LLC and for the process through which he addressed their concerns.  

“You had the guts to take it on,” Ald. Richard Mell (33rd) said to Emanuel in a floor speech.
