Tunney gets emotional as Wrigley deal clears Council

The City Council unanimously passed on Wednesday a plan to redo Wrigley Field and its surrounding area, prompting Wrigleyville Alderman Tom Tunney (44th) to reflect on how the Chicago Cubs affect the Lakeview neighborhood.

“The last few months have been trying on me and my community,” Tunney said on the council floor.

Deb Mell replaces her father on City Council

The Chicago City Council voted 43-1 on Wednesday confirming Deborah Mell to replace her father Richard Mell as alderman of the 33rd Ward on the city’s northwest side.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the appointment of Mell, a state representative since 2009, at a press conference earlier in the day. “Deb brings a strong legislative and voting record and a unique level of experience to the role, which separated her from other candidates for the position,” Emanuel said in a press statement.

Council passes mayor’s gun control measures

The City Council on Wednesday during a special meeting unanimously passed gun control ordinances introduced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

One of the ordinances strengthens the city’s assault weapons ban and establishes new possession penalties of 20-90 days in jail and a $1,000-$5,000 fine. The measure was introduced in the wake of gun-related legislation enacted by the state last week that gave Chicago and other cities 10 days to update their assault weapons bans.
