CPS officials square off with aldermen over district budget

Members of the City Council Committee on Education assailed officials from the Chicago Public Schools on Friday for what they argued was a lack of transparency in the school district's proposed fiscal year 2014 budget.

The $5.6 billion budget, which includes at least $68 million in cuts to classroom instruction, is expected to win Board of Education approval at the Board’s Aug. 28 meeting.

Chicago Public Schools is cutting back on its required standardized tests, announced district CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett on Wednesday.

District officials decided to reduce the number of tests after gathering data from 17 focus groups and 450 teachers who responded to a survey on how to best modify the district’s assessment policy, according to a CPS press release.
