A dopey comment

Rose Kelly, senior counsel with the Chicago Department of Law, does not like the new state law legalizing medical marijuana. Kelly made a Freudian slip during a Thursday City Council Zoning Committee hearing, calling the Illinois Department of Agriculture the Department of Aggravation. Kelly corrected her mistake, but then said, “That’s what this whole act is – a little aggravating.”

In a City Council with many aldermen whose support Mayor Rahm Emanuel can count on more often than not, 2nd Ward Alderman Robert Fioretti is something of a reliable foe to the mayor. Fioretti has opposed Emanuel on several issues, including the city budget and the appointment of Deb Mell as 33rd Ward alderman.

Cook County CIO Lydia Murray spoke at a City Club of Chicago luncheon on Tuesday about the county’s efforts to update key technologies in 2014. Murray’s father, a pastor, and mother, a speech teacher, were both in attendance to hear her speak. “No pressure,” Murray joked before beginning her address. “I will have a report of how many times I said ‘um’ at the end of this.”

Turkey time

Chicago’s 80th annual McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be led by actress Drew Sidora as grand marshall, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The parade will take place with the help of over 1,000 volunteers and feature over 100 marching bands, floats and other attractions. Festivities kick off at 8 a.m. at Congress Parkway and State Street in the Loop.

Cold feet?

It might come as a surprise to hear that Chicago’s tough and outspoken Mayor Rahm Emanuel had gotten “cold feet” – unless it happened as a result of the mayor plunging into Lake Michigan in early March. And according to Emanuel, that’s exactly what he plans to do.
