Kindred spirits

After suffering a stroke last year that left him partially paralyzed on the left side of his body, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) forged an unlikely friendship. That friendship was with Jackson Cunningham, an 11-year-old boy from the central Illinois town of Oakwood. Cunningham in February of 2011 also suffered from a stroke, according to the Huffington Post. Shortly after Kirk’s stroke in February of 2012, he and Cunningham became pen pals. “Here’s some advice: … do not give up on yourself,” Cunningham wrote. “All the hard work is worth it.” The hard work from both parties has certainly paid off – Cunningham returned to school in the fall of 2011 and Kirk went back to work in the U.S. Senate this year.
