Festival de La Villita

The 25th annual Little Village Festival kicks off on the city’s Southwest Side Friday.

The free event features food, music, carnival rides and arts and crafts all weekend at the intersection of Kostner Avenue and 26th Street. Additionally, the festival will serve as the final destination of the 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade on Sunday.

More festivals

Little Village isn’t the only neighborhood with a festival this weekend.

The 43rd Street Festival is scheduled for Saturday between Drexel and Ellis avenues in Hyde Park. Fisher Fest kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday at St. John Fisher Church in Beverly. The Humboldt Park neighborhood's namesake park will host the Riot Fest music festival Friday through Sunday.

State of the Union: poor

Following transportation officials’ announcement of ambitious plans to overhaul the Loop’s Union Station, Neil Steinberg of the Chicago Sun-Times weighed in with some suggestions of his own for improving the iconic rail stop.

The Metropolitan Planning Council previously asked the public to submit ideas for station improvements, according to the Sun-Times. The winning submissions included a proposal for the installation a hammock, artificial turf, tetherball equipment and an area for aerobics and yoga.

For his part, Steinberg suggested better signage for trains and exits and measures to prevent “the cataracts of sewer water from dumping on the heads of people on the platforms.”
