A city on display

The fourth annual, self-guided Open House Chicago tour takes place this weekend.

Organized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, the event showcases 150 distinct Chicago buildings. The tour includes office towers, residential high-rises, hotels and places of worship. Downtown’s Loop Synagogue, the Inland Steel Building and the Godfrey Hotel are among the buildings featured on this year’s tour. During a City Club of Chicago speech last week, Chicago Architecture Foundation President Lynn Osmond said the record for the most buildings visited during the event’s two days is 40.

“Open House Chicago gives you access to buildings that tell the stories of Chicago communities and cultures,” reads the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s website. “By venturing into diverse neighborhoods for self-guided exploration, OHC participants come together to discover community and place.”

Crain’s Chicago Business announced the finalists in its contest of the coolest offices in Chicagoland on Thursday.

The paper chose the finalists after receiving hundreds of submissions. Those finalists include: Trading Technologies International Inc., a West Loop-based software firm; LinkedIn Corp.’s Chicago office; and Oak Brook-based logistics firm Hub Group Inc.

“From coffee bars stocked with specialty roasts to movie-screening rooms, submissions ran the gamut of cool features (and, admittedly, we experienced a few pangs of jealousy at such perks as in-office taprooms),” wrote Cassie Walker Burke, assistant managing editor for Crain’s.

Crain’s plans to unveil the contest’s winners online this weekend and in its Monday print edition.

Mom knows best

Gov. Pat Quinn’s mother, Eileen Quinn, does not approve of Bruce Rauner’s behavior.

Eileen, who turns 97 on Saturday, told the Chicago Sun-Times she is “very disgusted” with the attack ads the Republican gubernatorial candidate is running against her son.

“I can’t stand the lies that [Rauner] has each time that he’s on TV,” she said. “I think there’s nothing truthful about him.”

In response to the criticism, Rauner said “I’m horrified.” He added, “At least what I say is true, unlike [Quinn].”
