War of words

Gov. Pat Quinn got a zinger in against GOP nominee for governor Bruce Rauner as both men spoke at the Illinois Education Association’s 160th Representative Assembly at the Hilton Chicago on Friday.

Quinn pointed at Rauner and said, “Don’t compare me to ‘the Almighty,’ compare me to the alternative,” according to ABC’s Charles Thomas. The candidates were discussing state teacher retirement benefits.

Rahm’s Cookin’

“Don’t Cook the Planet,” the cookbook from Emily Abrams that promotes climate change-awareness by showcasing recipes from celebrity chefs that feature local ingredients, includes a “Homemade Challah” recipe from Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Also in the cookbook, Emanuel plugged his efforts to make Chicago more environmentally friendly. “Chicago is healthier and more economically vibrant as we work to reduce our emissions,” the mayor wrote, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. “There are tremendous benefits in increasing energy efficiency in buildings – saving dollars, creating jobs, making buildings more comfortable and reducing our emissions.”

Wagons west

Tony Hu, considered the “king” of Chicago’s Chinatown due to his operation of several popular restaurants in the neighborhood, is reportedly bringing his Lao You Ju concept to a 4,372-square-foot space at the Palms resort in Las Vegas, according to restaurant blog Eater.com.

An entity named Lao You Ju – which shares the same name as Hu’s restaurant located at 2002 S. Wentworth Ave. in Chinatown – is working with Forte Specialty Contractors to build out the old Little Buddha restaurant space. “Either the most important chef and restaurateur in Chicago’s Chinatown is headed to the Palms, or somebody will soon be changing the name of the next restaurant destined to take over from Little Buddha,” as Eater put it.

Extra cheddar

Those with a little extra cheddar in their pockets have a new way to burn through their cash. Deca restaurant and bar in Streeterville’s Ritz-Carlton hotel has unveiled its “Zillion Dollar Grilled Cheese” sandwich. The sandwich, which is available for a limited time, includes Wisconsin cheddar cheese containing 24-carat gold, free-roaming black Iberco ham from Spain and Laudemio Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi extra-virgin olive oil. The price? A mere $100.
