Senate panelists debate Illinois budget, encourage bipartisan action

All four state senators who participated in the City Club of Chicago’s Tuesday bipartisan panel discussion on the Illinois’ finances stressed the need for bilateral cooperation on budget matters in the Legislature.

Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-McHenry) first offered praise of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2016, saying the proposal was part of Rauner’s work to develop a bipartisan plan to address the state’s fiscal problems.

Members of the Illinois Senate on Thursday voted 32-26 to approve legislation enabling the state to fill a $1.6 hole in the fiscal year 2015 budget.

One of the two measures approved Thursday allows the state to avoid layoffs or furloughs of court reporters, daycare service providers and Illinois Department of Corrections employees, lawmakers said on the Senate floor. Without the budget fix, those programs were expected to run out of funding before the end of the current fiscal year.
