Jane Byrne, Chicago’s first female mayor, died on Friday at the age of 81.

Byrne passed just before 10 a.m. surrounded by her family and friends while in hospice care in a high-rise on the Magnificent Mile, the Chicago Tribune reported. Kathy Byrne, the former mayor’s daughter, said her mother died situated by a large window with a lakefront view.

“She looked down on the city she loved,” Kathy Byrne said.
