Rep. Roskam calls for passage of fast track trade legislation

While speaking during a Monday City Club of Chicago event, U.S. Congressman Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) called for passage of bipartisan trade legislation giving the president greater authority to negotiate trade agreements.

Trade promotion authority bills before both the House and Senate would expedite the passage of trade agreements the U.S. is considering with Pacific and European countries by granting the president greater authority to negotiate trade agreements and giving members of Congress less power to alter the deals.

Rep. Schakowsky blasts Rauner’s budget plan

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) criticized Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner for his proposed cuts in the 2016 budget during a Monday City Club of Chicago event.

Schakowsky took aim at the governor’s proposal to reduce Medicaid spending by $1.47 billion. She argued Rauner’s budget would do away with breast and cervical cancer care and reduce funding for Illinois universities by 30 percent.

“That’s what you do, I guess, with a turnaround company,” the congresswoman said. “Bottom line matters and people don’t.”
