Over 61 percent of state legislative races already decided

Illinois voters will have an opportunity to cast ballots in over 150 state legislative races this November, but many of those elections appear to have already been decided.

Only one candidate will appear on the general election ballot in 97 of the 158 state House and Senate races this year. All 118 House seats are up for election, but just 41 percent of those races have two candidates. The 70 House candidates without a challenger include 43 Democrats and 27 Republicans.

iBIO is a life sciences industry organization with over 500 members, including private companies, universities, other academic institutions and service providers. Its membership comes from the agricultural, bio-industrial, pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors.

Public Health Commissioner Morita says department needs partners to be successful; highlights new grant to prevent violence in Chicago

Dr. Julie Morita, who has served as commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health since early 2015, stressed the importance of cooperation among government agencies, community groups and private companies to improving public health outcomes while speaking at a City Club of Chicago luncheon on Tuesday.

Discussing her department’s efforts, Morita stated, “We need to have partnerships to help us to be successful. We cannot do any of this work alone.”

Free Spirit Media students find confidence in summer program

Teenager Kenyetta Johnson did not get a lot of encouragement when she would tell people about her love of the arts and film. Adults would ask, “Is that practical? Can you make a career out of something like that?”

But a summer internship in media secured through Free Spirit Media has helped Johnson put those doubts to rest.
