District 49 primary shaping up as a contest between experience and youth

A two-term DuPage County board member and a 28-year-old with one local-government race under his belt are facing off in this year’s Republican primary in Illinois House District 49.

Six-term state Rep. Mike Fortner (R-West Chicago) currently represents the district but announced last August that he would not seek re-election. Fortner’s announcement came following his vote to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of the state’s budget bill that included a 32 percent income tax hike.

State lawmakers prepare for November veto session

The Illinois General Assembly will begin its second veto session on Tuesday, November 7 following three days of votes in October that saw the House fail to override Gov. Rauner’s veto of a bill prohibiting “right-to-work” zones.

Members of the General Assembly could address several others vetoes when they return to Springfield this week.

Republican state representatives who voted for tax increases report mixed Q3 fundraising results

On July 2, 2017, 15 Republican state representatives voted in favor of the Illinois state budget plan that included significant increases in the individual and corporate income tax rates. Nine of those Republicans have already announced that they will not seek reelection. The other six Republicans who voted for the tax increases and are seeking reelection reported mixed fundraising results in three months following the vote.
