Cook County commissioners postpone vote on measure creating gun violence task force

After lengthy debate during the Cook County Criminal Justice Committee meeting on Wednesday, commissioners decided to delay voting on a proposed ordinance that would establish a gun violence task force and appoint a gun violence “czar” with a goal of reducing gun violence in Cook County.

CDC awards Illinois grant to combat prescription drug overdoses

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Friday awarded Illinois a four-year, $3.6 million grant to fund efforts to prevent prescription opioid overdoses. 

Illinois was one of sixteen states that received grant funding through the CDC’s Prescription Drug Overdose: Prevention for States program, which aims to end what officials have described as a prescription drug overdose epidemic.

Debate over new Noble Charter campus on Southwest Side heats up

A group of parents, students and community members attended the Chicago Board of Education meeting this week to urge board members to support the construction of a new Noble charter school on the city’s Southwest Side. The meeting came just days after other residents and community groups had gathered at the local alderman’s office in protest of the proposal for the new school.

CTU VP criticizes recent budget cuts, calls for tax increases

Chicago Teachers Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey on Thursday criticized the $5.7 billion spending plan the Chicago Board of Education approved one day earlier and called for additional tax increases to help Chicago Public Schools fill budget gaps.

While speaking at a City Club of Chicago luncheon, Sharkey said the Board of Education’s decision to make large spending cuts to address budget shortfalls will be particularly harmful to students.
