Panel passes measure targeting those failing to pay fines, appear at administrative hearings

The City Council Committee on Public Safety approved a measure Thursday that expands the number of crimes for which an individual would face additional fines or jail time for failing to appear at a hearing or pay a required fine.

Current law provides that those who fail to pay a fine or appear at a hearing before the Department of Administrative Hearings in connection with a cannabis-related offense are subject to an additional fine equal to the maximum fine for the underlying crime or imprisonment for up to six months.
