CPS students discuss social justice at Project Soapbox Competition

Two hundred Chicago Public Schools students gathered at Jones College Prep this past Saturday to speak about important issues facing the city and country during the semifinals and finals of the 10th annual Project Soapbox Competition.

The Project Soapbox Competition brings together students for “powerful speeches on issues that are most important to them.” Semifinalists at Saturday’s event talked about the Black Lives Matter movement, sexual harassment, racial epithets, mental health and people with disabilities.

Kennedy leads Biss in A-1 contributions since Oct.1; Pritzker still ahead of the pack

Illinois gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy has far outpaced most of his opponents in the Democratic primary race in so-called A-1 campaign contributions since October 1.

Kennedy netted just over $100,000 from about 25 businesses and individuals. Biss reported a little under $14,000 from 10 individuals.

Billionaire JB Pritzker outraised both, albeit with his own money. Pritzker gave his campaign committee $7 million on October 13.  Pritzker’s campaign has been entirely self-funded.

Radio show host, former Illinois gubernatorial candidate and Illinois Policy Institute fellow Dan Proft is set to speak on “The State of Illinois Politics” at the City Club of Chicago this coming Monday, November 6.

ForeverCar closes $15 million financing round

Chicago-based ForeverCar on Tuesday announced the closing of a $15 million debt and equity financing round.

The company operates a web-based platform that sells vehicle service contracts to car owners in all 50 states whose vehicles are not covered by a manufacturer warranty.  In total, ForeverCar has raised more than $25 million in funding to date.

Benefit Chicago announces $12 million in loans for six Chicago-area organizations

Benefit Chicago on Wednesday announced the recipients of its first round of loans, which total $12 million. The six organizations receiving loans are: AutonomyWorks, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI), Garfield Produce Company, IFF, the Southwest Corridor Collaborative of LISC Chicago, and Sweet Beginnings, the for-profit subsidiary of the North Lawndale Employment Network.

So. Ill. Democratic County Chairmen’s Assoc. endorses Kennedy for governor

Illinois gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy on Wednesday announced he had received the endorsement of the Southern Illinois Democratic County Chairman’s Association. A press release from the campaign claimed it was the first major endorsement in the race for governor on the Democratic side.

BGA panel addresses Laquan McDonald legacy

A year ago this week, the Chicago Police Department, under a court order, released a video that showed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald being shot 16 times by a Chicago police officer as the teen moved away. The images rocked the city. Since, officer Jason Van Dyke has been charged with murder, the Department of Justice opened a wide-ranging investigation, the agency that investigates police misconduct has been abolished and a steady drumbeat of protests have pushed the city to pursue a wide range of other reforms.
