As reported today, Emanuel and LaHood said the city has secured the money needed to extend the Riverwalk. Plans were rolled out last October for the six-block extension.
Interestingly, though, this project has been in the making for years. A story in the Tribune last October explained that architect Daniel Burnham suggested the Riverwalk as a city recreational center in his 1909 Plan of Chicago. The idea for a continuous Riverwalk path was revitalized in the 80s and 90s, but never came to fruition.
