Cubs to honor Wrigley’s 100th anniversary with Mag Mile public art installation

Cubs Charities, the philanthropic arm of the Chicago Cubs, on Tuesday announced a public art installation that will honor Wrigley Field's 100th anniversary beginning later this week.

Cubs Charities partnered with 47 area artists, nonprofit groups and celebrities to design 50 pairs of special-made ballpark seats for its Centennial Seats dispay, which will adorn Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile beginning on Friday, according to a Cubs press release. The seats, each of which “depict a special moment in time at Wrigley Field,” according to the release, will stretch from the Chicago River northward to Delaware Avenue.

The pieces are slated for auction once they are taken off display. Proceeds will be split between Cubs Charities and the organization’s respective partners in the project.

"This has been such a special year as we celebrate Wrigley Field and what the park has meant to Chicago over the past century," Cubs co-owner and Cubs Charities Board Chair Laura Ricketts, said. "We can't wait to honor [Cubs fans] by giving back to the community with this special” offering.

Among Cubs Charities’ partners for the project are: the National Museum of Mexican Art, the South Chicago Art Center, the Chicago Blackhawks and actor Vince Vaughn.

Also on Tuesday, the Cubs announced a planned 30,000-square-foot underground clubhouse and other new additions proposed as part of the organization’s overarching, $500 million Wrigley-area overhaul, the Chicago Tribune reported. The new proposals would add $75 million to the project’s total cost.
