Aurora mayor touts drop in crime

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner touted drops in crime in Illinois’ second-largest city while speaking at a Tuesday City Club of Chicago event.

Weisner said Aurora’s average annual murder rate over the past six years decreased 84 percent compared to the 10 years prior. By the same comparison, shootings dropped 69 percent, robberies decreased by 51 percent and burglaries decreased by 56 percent.

“We’re overcoming a long-held reputation as a city with a major gang, crime, drug and violence problem,” he said. “By taking a comprehensive community approach, by working closely with federal law enforcement agencies, and by providing our police with state-of-the-art tools and technology, Aurora has indeed turned the tide on crime.”
